Why Video Games?

Research from the NDP Group and University of California, San Diego (UCSD) has shown that certain video games can help reduce sadness, pain, boredom, anxiety, and hyperactivity, while enhancing focus and cognitive engagement.

Gaming is more than fun - it's a proven tool for healing and connection, helping individuals of all ages find calm, focus, and purpose.

Note: Virtual reality (VR) games are currently not recommended for children under age 12.

Games That Support Wellbeing

Games preloaded onto each Nintendo Switch are thoughtfully chosen to help:

  • Reduce stress and promote calmness
  • Encourage mindfulness and emotional regulation
  • Improve focus and hand-eye coordination
  • Foster teamwork and social connection
  • Provide healthy, positive mental stimulation

Officer

"I've been able to use the Nintendo Switch to de-escalate students in crisis on several occasions. It's amazing how quickly a student can calm down - what used to take an hour now takes minutes.

I also use it as a reward for good behavior. Though I'm no longer undefeated in Mario Kart, it's worth it!"

"One student who didn't trust law enforcement started stopping by my office after seeing the Switch. We played Mario Kart together, and that built a relationship that allowed him to open up and regulate his emotions.
